Sociocultural adaptation of foreign students

Sociocultural adaptation of foreign students

One of the priorities of the Department for Work with Foreign Students of the Department of International Cooperation of the Federal State University of Education is the socio-cultural adaptation of foreign students at our university.

As part of the implementation of this task, the Department for work with foreign students conducts the following activities:

1. Informational meetings aimed at clarifying migration legislation, as well as the rules of residence in the dormitory, are the most important event where the staff of the Department for work with foreign students familiarize foreign students who have entered our university with the basic rules of conduct, rules of stay and rules of accommodation. These meetings are held for small groups of international students fr om the same country. The headman is always present at the meeting, who explains difficult points to the children in their native language in order to avoid misunderstandings and distortions of information.

2. Educational seminar "Around the World – Through the Eyes of Foreign Students of the University of Education". A series of educational seminars for foreign students of the University of Education, dedicated to the countries whose citizens study at the University of Education. During these seminars, foreign students can talk about their country, its traditions, customs, the brightest and most interesting holidays, culture, everything they would like to share and be proud of in their homeland. At the end of each seminar, the next participating country is drawn fr om a lottery machine. Based on the results of the seminar, all foreign students who take an active part in its holding are awarded certificates and souvenirs with the University's symbols.

3. Excursions for foreign students of the University of Education to cities and museums of Russia. The Department for Work with Foreign Students organizes cultural leisure for foreign students. The students, accompanied by staff of the International Cooperation Department of the University of Education, travel to nearby towns in the Moscow region, improve their language skills (since the excursions are conducted in Russian), make new friends, and learn about Russian culture and traditions. Excursion trips help students overcome the language barrier when communicating with university staff, as during the trip, on the bus, there is an opportunity to communicate in an informal setting, which further helps our students avoid feelings of anxiety and excitement in business communication in a Russian-speaking environment. Great importance is attached to introducing foreign students to the history of our country. For this purpose, excursions are organized to the Central Museum of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. During the excursion, students get acquainted with the most important milestones in the history of the Russian army over several centuries, learn how military uniforms and weapons changed, wh ere and when the most important military events took place.

The Department for work with foreign students also organizes specialized, thematic excursions for students studying at the Faculty of Russian Philology. Our students visit the Yasnaya Polyana Museum estate of the great Russian writer Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy, which allows them to "touch the history" and walk around the places wh ere Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy created his works. According to the students, this tour helps the children in the process of their studies, such an off-site study session encourages them to learn even more about the Russian language, in which the world-famous works of Russian literature were written. Many students later choose the works of Lev Nikolaevich to write their creative and graduation papers.

4. Holidays. The Department for Work with Foreign Students actively attracts foreign students to participate in traditional Russian holidays such as New Year, Tatiana's Day, Maslenitsa and others. For international students, the staff of the Department for Work with foreign students, together with the Department of Russian as a foreign language, annually organizes a New Year's event with the participation of Santa Claus and the Snow Maiden, who hold traditional contests for students (snowman, snowballs), dance with students and sing New Year's songs.

Our foreign students look forward to the arrival of spring. After all, this means that Maslenitsa week is approaching, during which many master classes, contests and outdoor sports competitions are organized for the students. And Maslenitsa week ends, as we all know, with the burning of an effigy of Maslenitsa and a tea party with pancakes. At this time, all students of the University of Education rejoice together at the arrival of spring and happily spend time in the university courtyard, communicating with each other and warming themselves in the first warm rays of the spring sun.
